A big hearty congratulations to me as I emerged victorious as a FUTURE NURSE SCHOLAR. About few months ago, I
The Future Nursing Leadership programme is a Nursing led scholarships, fellowships and professional development programme designed to enable Nigerian Nurses to study and develop themselves as future nurse leaders in Nigeria, whilst joining a global community of health professionals creating positive change in Nigeria.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria subscribes to the fact that Nursing is an inalienable right of citizens and as such professional Nurses have the responsibilities of assisting them to attain the optimal level of health.
However, the overwhelming majority of nurses are burnt out, underpaid, overworked, and underappreciated in Nigeria. A coordinated strategy must be put in place in order to achieve significant improvement in the Nursing Workforce as recommended byWorld Health Organization.
One of the major recommendations of WHO (2020) is to promote new nurse training and support programs with policy on affordable tuition fees/charges and provision of funding and scholarship opportunities from RN to PhD.
According to the ICN 2022 Sustain and Retain Report, the main source of new supply of nurses should be to invest in training more nurses domestically.
The Future Nursing Leadership Program was therefore established in response to the global need to invest in supporting increased supply of “new nurses”, both to meet growing and changing demand created by the pandemic, and because of reduced supply (retention) of the current nursing workforce.
Out of 817 applicants and thorough independent review, 25 successful applicants have been invited for interview- dates September 19th, 2023
The final winners will be announced October 18th, 2023.
